Before today, I had a preconceived idea of architecture being fine line drawings that had to be perfect and had to communicate the idea of being a building. However, I was completely wrong, I throughly enjoyed the workshop today was pleasantly surprised about how expressive I could be when drawing using a vast amount of mediums. I thought the work would be very flat, none textural pencil drawings which where small and had multiple detailed angels. I loved the hands approach of using clay and sticks to create the work. At first I was a little bit apprehensive of working in team, this being because of being liking to be individual and getting on with the work and not conversing with others. However, we worked very well. I think we each implemented our own unique stylisation within the work but I think could of made more texture in the piece as I think it was quite flat. We could of done this as a group by wrapping parts of wooden sticks using threads, I think this would of looked great juxtaposing the hard tinted acetate.

I particularly liked in today’s task when we drew from the reflection on the wall. I thought this was very organic for me to produce, however, I do wish I used multiple media’s when drawings, I would like to go back into my work and create more depth, I could do this by going back through ink and running it over the oil paste lines. I think I could have used more mediums within the work I used pastels quite a lot I think i need develop my understanding of other mediums, I would like to use charcoal pencils more and biros as I think I could create some interesting textures and mark making when using them. I think when creating my illustration of my idea using inks and grey scale watercolours I think this is unlocked a new figurative and structural aspect to my work. At first when completing the end based in a stretch and I felt very uncomfortable however as a piece of development and sprue across the page it felt more natural and I felt more confident when completing it.

What was your response to the brief?

My response to the brief was stainless steel and scrap wood with structure that inhabits nature and allows bird spotters to view the wildlife around them through mirror plated glass at the top of the silhouette, with solar panels acquiring energy. The structure is built and intertwined with wide life, The gaps allows trees to grow throughout the piece disclosing it into the surroundings.

What is your understanding between the relationship between shape and structure? Strength, visual interest, material?

The relationship between the shape and structure of the work are very contrasting, the stainless steal beams are build into the ground and our cold, strong and broad. However, the gaps within the piece allow the trees to grow and intertwine with its surroundings, submerging the once man made, steal, juxtaposing steel frame into the wildlife. The connection and join points allow birds to rest and re energise by them acting as silhouettes and holes for the animals to Create nests and feed. Visually, the piece is very futuristic looking due to the materials, I like the juxtaposition of the wildlife and man made object, is inspired by where we are now.

What was successful about the structure you made?

What was successful about the structure we made was the juxtaposition within the shapes, some shapes being squared off and having extra beams and others being quite visually loose and free. I liked the shadows given off when we shined light through the piece. I particularly liked the shinny, metallic like metal paper we used, this giving off a loose and figure structuring beaming from the top and leading down to the bottom. I think the happy acdent of some clay balls being larger than each other made the work more obscure and interesting to look at, I liked how some areas of the structure where very intense with lots going on, and some being very loose and open.

What would you of changed about it?

I would of liked to use more materials within the work when cladding. I think it would of been very interesting to use tin foils, moulding, wrapping and coiling the tin foil to wooden sticks as I think this would of made some very interesting textures within the work when the light was beamed through the structure. I would of liked too made the structures large towards the top making a focal point for the work as I think it would further developed the structure of the work.

What is the USE, SITE, SCALE, MATERIALS?

The use of the structure created today is to encourage birds and wildlife to settle down and breed, eat and set up home in controlled and natural environment. The piece would be half the size of an oak tree, with gaps in the structure to allow new oak trees to go from where the original ones have been cut down. The site for the structure would be paced within the heart of London, and contrast the lack of wildlife and woods Londoners initially interacts with on a day to day basis. The work is inspired by own love for nature as well as where I live there is a bird sanctuary near the train station, unfortunately it being locked off and has had building work next to it for many Months. The materials used in the work shall be an mix of eco friendly and sourced structures ranging from scrap wood for the bird watches hut and stainless steal broad beams so the structure does not decay and rust. Solar panels shall be placed on the top, allowing the energy for the structure to be run by earths sunlight.

What was the main concept?

The main concept for the work was to encourage wildlife to be within a controlled environment, however, this being placed within a natural environment. Allowing the birds to rest, feed and mate from the bird feeders offered and vests which are placed between the joints of the structure. The concept pushes the busy London environment together with nature. It also allows nature enthusiasts to explore the area around them without moving, them mirror glass towards the top of the structure allows the bird watched to see 360 degrees around them, up and inside the trees.

I would like to developed the proposal by creating imagery attached to the worn through college with my book. I would also like to explore light and Silhouettes and configure other areas within the structure that could be be used for humans, having clear glass rooms within the structure so humans can explore and almost touch the birds. What I take away from the work shop is that I could like use clay again to create structures and shapes within my work as I could this particularly interesting. I would also like to explore with drawing with the lights off of minimal light as I found this further abstracted and loosed my drawings s from what they where already. It also broke down my pre conceived idea of Architecture, that I had built up in my mind and presented in a negative form.
